Obverse: a portrait of Queen Victoria looking to the left with a veil. Around, words engraved in a circle: “VICTORIA∙DEI∙GRA∙BRITT∙REGINA∙FID∙DEF∙IND∙IMP∙”, (eng. Victoria by the Grace of God Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Empress of India).
Reverse: rendition of St. George mounted on horseback slaying a dragon. The year of minting the coin is engraved at the bottom.
About the coin: Great Britain first minted Gold half Sovereigns in 1544 during the reign of King Henry VIII. They were continued from 1817-1937, and not issued again until 1980. The coin was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci, a well-known Italian engraver of gems and coins.
