Obverse: the coin depicts three Pandas drinking from a stream, with a bamboo forest in the background. The weight of the coin, the name of the precious metal and the fineness '1 OZ Au. 999', with the denomination '500元' at the top.
Reverse: the reverse of the coin shows the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The inscription '中华人民共和国' (the People's Republic of China in English) is engraved above the Temple.
About the coin: it is the world's most popular investment gold, collectable Chinese coin among investors, collectors and jewellers. The coin is minted in pure .999 gold. The Chinese Gold Panda was first minted in 1983 by the Central Bank of China and introduced as legal tender. For the first three years of minting, the coin had a limited mintage of 10 000 pieces per year. Each year this coin undergoes a change of design, only in 2002 the design was changed and was used in 2001. This coin is minted at three mints in China, namely Shenzhen, Shanghai and Shenyang. However, unlike the practice of mints in other countries, these coins do not bear mint marks. Instead, the different mints make minor design differences between their minted coins, such as the size of the font, the size of the bamboo forest and the minimal differences in the design of the Temple of Paradise.
