About the coin: this extremely rare coin (only 500 pieces!) was issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Court of Human Rights. 23 February 2009 marked the 50th anniversary of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, the continent's most important human rights institution. The European Court of Human Rights was established in 1959 to protect civil and political rights when the horrors of the previous decades were still fresh in Europe's memory. The aim was to create a basis of trust and solidarity for the emerging European unification and to protect against any violation of fundamental human rights and dignity.
