Obverse: the obverse of the coin depicts two Horses, the words "Year of the Horse" are engraved on the bottom of the coin, and the Chinese character for the Year of the Horse is engraved above the Horses. The letter 'P', representing the Australian National Mint, is struck on the right-hand side of the coin.
Reverse: the reverse of the coin depicts Queen Elizabeth II, who is also the Monarch of Australia. The words 'ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA' are engraved on the top of the coin, while the bottom of the coin shows the weight, fineness, precious metal, year of issue and denomination '1 kg 999 SILVER 2014 50 DOLLARS'.
About the coin: The Perth Mint has been minting the popular LUNAR series of silver coins since 1999. These coins commemorate the 12-year Chinese lunar calendar. This Chinese calendar has been around since 2600 BC and the power that the sign of the animal underneath it has over the personalities born underneath it is still believed to this day. The first series of silver coins was completed in 2007, following the gold coins of the 1st Lunar Series from 1996 to 2007. Since 2008, the Perth Mint has been producing Series II coins. The production of Lunar Series silver coins ranges from the smallest 1/2 ounce coin to a huge 10 kg coin.
