About the coin: the theme of the 2012 Pure Gold Coin Series Natura is "Families of Nature". The scientific name of the African wild dog, Lycaon pictus, is derived from the Greek word for 'wolf' and the Latin word for 'painted'. Each animal's coat is irregularly spotted, with reddish, black and white patterns unique to each individual. Although their behaviour is similar to that of northern hemisphere wolves, they differ from dogs and wolves in that they have only four toes on each foot, not five. They have large, rounded ears, which result in extremely acute hearing. These slender, long-legged hunters are highly social animals and live in close-knit packs led by an alpha pair. Each of the four Natura coin reverses depicts a different aspect of their lives. African dogs hunt in packs and work together as a team to chase and stab their prey. When their prey is exhausted, African dogs kill it quickly and efficiently. Their diet consists of antelope, zebra and pigs, supplemented by rodents and birds.
