Obverse: the coin is struck with the Coat of Arms of Panama in the center of the obverse, with 9 stars at the top, representing the nine provinces of Panama at that time (now 10). Around this coat of arms is embossed the name of the country 'REPUBLICA DE PANAMA' and the year of issue. The inscription 'PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO' (for the Good of the World) is embossed at the top.
Reverse: the coin features a portrait of Vasco Núñez de Balboa on the reverse. Around this portrait, the denomination 'VN CUARTO DE BALBOA' and a wreath are embossed.
About the coin: this is a silver 1/4 Balboa coin issued in 1947. The coin commemorates Vasco Núñez de Balboa, a Spaniard who was the first European to reach the Pacific Ocean by land and discover the Pearl Archipelago in 1513.
