Obverse: Features a crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The surrounding inscriptions read “QUEEN ELIZABETH II”, “ST. HELENA”, the face value “ONE POUND” and the year of issue “2021”.
Reverse: Features a traditional Chinese dragon entwined around a globe, with the outline of China highlighted. The inscription “TRADE DOLLAR” appears above. The design is a modern interpretation of the historic Chinese “Dragon Trade Dollar” coins.
About the coin: Issued on behalf of Saint Helena in 2021, this coin is the first release in the “Modern Trade Dollar” series dedicated to historic trade dollars. In the late 19th century, Chinese silver trade coins featuring dragons were used in international commerce and became widely known as “Dragon Dollars”. The modern coin was issued by The East India Company and struck by Tower Mint in London. It is made from .999 fine silver and contains 1 troy ounce of pure silver.
