The bottom of the coin bears the famous phrase and the traveller's name 'JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO PRIMUS CIRCUMDEDISTI ME' and the dates of the voyage '1519 1522'. The year of issue and the country of origin 'ESPAÑA 2022' are embossed on the right-hand side.

About the coin: this €2 commemorative coin was issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world. The Magellan and Elcano expedition was a 16th-century maritime expedition funded by the King of Spain, led by Ferdinand Magellan, who, on his return, completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth in history with Juan Sebastián Elcano. The first circumnavigation of the world was considered a great achievement and influenced Europe's knowledge of the world. At the end of his journey, Elcano received a globe from the King of Spain with the Latin phrase "Primus circumdedisti me" (you circumnavigated me first).
