Behind him is Mount Purgatori, the symbol of Purgatory, a detail from an illustration of the Divine Comedy. The initials 'RI' stand for the Italian Republic. The letter 'R' to the right of the coin indicates the mint in Rome. The initials 'SP' of Silvia Petrassi, the designer of the coin, are to the left of the coin at the bottom. Next to the dates 1265 (the year of Dante Alighieri's birth) and 2015 (the year the coin was minted). The top of the coin is inscribed 'DANTE ALIGHIERI'. The outer ring of the coin bears the 12 stars of the European Union. A common Italian €2 coin - this coin depicts Raphael as painted by Dante Alighieri. The original is kept in the Pope Julius II Corpus of the Vatican City Palace.
