Obverse: depicts the small coat of arms of the Russian Empire - a crowned double-headed eagle holding the monarchical symbols in its talons, with St. The eagle has St George on its chest and the emblems of the imperial lands on its wings. The bottom of the coin bears the mintmark 'МИ' (Mikhail Ivanov).
Reverse: the denomination '5 РУБЛЕЙ' (5 roubles) and the year of minting are engraved in the centre of the reverse. The words 'ЧИСТАГО ЗОЛОТА 1 ЗОЛОТНИКЪ 39 ДОЛЕЙ' are engraved around the coin.
Edge: patterned, with the letters AG, FZ, АР or ЭБ for the year in question (these letters stand for the initials of the mint master AG - Apollon Grasgof, FZ - Felix Zaleman, АР - Alexander Redko and ЭБ - Elikum Babayants).
