Although amber is not measured in carats, it has always been considered Lithuanian gold. Authentic, luxurious, with its unique and deep history, amber is millions of years old and is valued all over the world as a natural resource on a par with gold. Amber is surrounded by many stories and legends, the origin of which began in Antiquity. Such legendary figures as Homer, Plato and Aristotle have already mentioned amber in their works.

In Lithuanian, the word "amber" comes from the word “to protect from diseases and the evil eye”. Therefore, since ancient times, protective amulets, jewelry and other products that protect against diseases and disasters have been made from it. A large amount of amber is located on the southeastern coast of the Baltic Sea, in the Kaliningrad region. This amber is also called succinate. More than 200 types of amber are known in the world, and every year more and more new types are discovered. However, Baltic amber is considered the most valuable.

How was amber formed?

It took nature millions of years for us to be able to hold amber in our hands today. It is estimated that amber was formed 50 million years ago when our region was very hot and humid. And where the seas are now, huge forests and other vegetation grew. Amber is a fossil mineral. Accumulations of tree resin were washed away from the forest soil by rivers and carried south to the sea.

Amber was created from a species of pine - Pinus succinifera. The resin was primarily intended to protect the plant, it contains many bactericidal preservatives that protect the body of the tree very well. Over time, through the process of oxidation and polymerization, the resin turned into amber. Baltic Sea amber has been formed from the sap of coniferous trees over 2 million years, acquiring various shapes and colors and carrying various fossils along the way.

Amber has 4 stages of formation:

  • The first is the extraction of resin from trees.
  • The second happens when the resin enters dry, sandy, well-ventilated, and oxygenated soil.
  • The third is the contact of the resin with water. The hardened resin ends up in the sea, where the final stage of formation takes place.
  • The fourth is accumulations of resin that have settled on the seabed, mixed with sandy deposits for millions of years and form.

Properties and uniqueness of the amber

Amber is valued not only for its uniqueness and exceptional appearance but also for its healing properties. Formed over many years, amber has a positive effect on the human body - it strengthens the immune system, protects the body from various diseases, and neutralizes toxins. Amber products have calming properties and help to overcome anxiety and stress. Amber will also help those who want to improve the functioning of the thyroid gland and restore internal energy and peace.

The benefits of amber were widely known in Antiquity. For example, the Romans used amber to fight various diseases. The famous physician of that time, Callistratus, said that amber could protect a person from insanity. It was also used to treat colds, ear diseases, and sore throats. It is still believed that amber protects a person and his house from the evil eye.

This creation of nature is also unique because you will not find two identical-looking amber nuggets. All of them differ in their structure, color, and shape. Therefore, by having amber at home, you can be sure that you have a unique and one-of-a-kind piece of nature in front of you. Amber comes in a wide variety of colors, but the most common color for Baltic amber is yellow or light yellow. The size of amber usually ranges from 1-2 mm to 1 m, weighing up to 1 kg.

In the Baltic States amber is famous for its high concentration of acid. This acid has anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulatory properties and is used in cosmetics for the production of powders, creams, and other cosmetics, as well as in medicine for the development of anti-cancer and other drugs.

Amber with inclusions - what is it?

Amber can hide various secrets dating back millions of years. When the rivers carried the resin of trees to the seas, along the way they came across all kinds of particles of flora and fauna - plants, tree branches, and small insects that remain forever in amber and are called inclusions.

Amber with inclusion is perhaps one of the most unique and sought-after among collectors. Such amber is often called frozen prehistory, which attracts the attention of not only buyers but also scientists. Inclusions in amber are the most popular and valued object of paleontological (a science that studies the organic world of the geological past and the patterns of its development) research.

Inside the amber, information about the fauna and flora that existed millions of years ago, as well as the climatic conditions of that time, was perfectly preserved. Everything can be found in transparent amber nuggets: plants, soil fragments, bacteria, and microorganisms, but the most attention is drawn to living creatures, which are forever imprisoned in resin. In such specimens, arthropods and winged insects can most often be seen.

How to distinguish real amber from a fake?

Is it real amber in your palm? No special instruments are needed to check, but just looking at it will not be enough. As is the case with other products, amber fakes are inevitable - some of them are very professionally reproduced: the smell characteristic of amber is created, and the color is extracted with the help of chemicals. It can be difficult for the average shopper to distinguish real amber from fake amber. However, there are several ways to verify their authenticity:

  • The smell test is one of the quickest and easiest ways to verify the authenticity of a product. It is enough to rub amber strongly in the palm of your hand, if it is real, you will feel the soft aroma of pine resin. Although this method is one of the fastest and easiest, it should not be relied upon alone. Currently, there are hardly distinguishable fakes that emit exactly the same smell as real amber. At the slightest doubt, it is recommended to conduct additional tests at home.
  • The salt water test is a simple method that requires water and a saline solution. Dip the amber into this solution and observe. Real amber floats to the surface, while a plastic fake instantly sinks to the bottom. However, it is worth remembering that the Baltic Sea is not salty enough to bring amber to the surface, so most often it remains at the bottom.
  • The alcohol solution test is another way to verify the authenticity of amber. Moisten a piece of material in alcohol and wipe the amber product with it. If the product is real, it will not respond. If it is plastic, then it will begin to melt and be damaged. By the way, amber is extremely resistant to chemical reactions and environmental influences. This is confirmed by the fact that amber has practically not changed over so many millions of years in different climatic conditions.
  • The heat test is a little more complicated, but it can be done even at home. The melting point of real amber reaches 370°C. Of course, at home we will not get such a temperature and it is not recommended to do this, but you can heat a simple pin or needle and touch amber with it. The real product will begin to emit a pleasant tar smell. Meanwhile, a fake, if it is made of plastic, will instantly melt.

Conclusion

In order to avoid tests and save time, it is recommended to choose amber only in specialized and reliable stores, so you will be sure that you are purchasing a quality amber product, and not a fake. Baltic amber is exceptional and the most valuable in the world. It is worth remembering that this natural wealth decreases every year, and after centuries, amber will become an invaluable natural value. Here you can buy exclusive amber - Baltic gold.
