Obverse: The obverse of each 2016 2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad coin depicts the Independence Victory Column and the peaks of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. These volcanoes were named after an ancient Aztec couple whose tragic love story is as poignant as that of Romeo and Juliet.
Reverse: The reverse features the modern Mexican coat of arms in the center, surrounded by 10 historical versions of the emblem used since 1821. The coat of arms shows a golden eagle battling a snake while perched on a cactus branch.
About the coin: The Mexican Silver Libertad is one of the world’s oldest bullion coin programs, yet also one of the least visible. Officially issued since 1982, its profile and mintage remain much smaller than rivals such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and the American Eagle. Nevertheless, it is a popular coin due to its beautiful design and unique status. Today, the 2016 2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad is available as a BU specimen released by JM Bullion.
