Obverse: The centre of the coin features the greater coat of arms of the Republic of Estonia – three lions on a shield surrounded by oak branches. The year of issue “2020” appears on both sides of the coat of arms, while the inscription “EESTI VABARIIK” is placed below.
Reverse: A modern stylised profile portrait of Jüri Jaakson is depicted using different levels of relief. Beside the portrait, his lifespan “1870–1942” and the name “JÜRI JAAKSON” are inscribed vertically. The denomination “15 €” appears on the left.
About the coin: In 2020, the Bank of Estonia issued this collectible silver coin to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jüri Jaakson. He was one of Estonia’s prominent statesmen, serving as the country’s head of state from 1924 to 1925 and as Governor of the Bank of Estonia from 1926 to 1940. During his tenure, important monetary and banking reforms were implemented, contributing to the development of Estonia’s modern central banking system. In 1941, he was arrested by the Soviet occupation authorities and was killed in 1942.
The coin was designed by Anna Roomet, Risto Tali and Rait Siska and struck by the Royal Dutch Mint. It is made of .925 silver, weighs 28.28 g, has a diameter of 38.61 mm and a Proof finish. The face value is 15 euros, and the mintage is limited to only 3,000 pieces.
