Obverse: the obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II”, “D.G. REG. F.D.” and the denomination “2 POUNDS”.
Reverse: the reverse depicts Britannia, the national female personification of Great Britain. She stands holding a trident and an olive branch beside a shield bearing the Union Flag. Around the design are the inscriptions “BRITANNIA”, “ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER” and the year “2006”.
About the coin: the 2006 1 oz Britannia PROOF silver coin is a collector's issue produced by The Royal Mint. It was struck in 958 fine Britannia silver, the standard used until 2012. The coin contains one troy ounce of pure silver (31.103 g), while its total weight is higher due to the alloy composition.
Its most notable feature is the PROOF finish. Proof coins are struck using specially polished dies and blanks, creating mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Multiple strikes ensure exceptional sharpness and detail.
The reverse design was created by renowned British artist Philip Nathan. This classic Britannia representation is considered one of the most iconic designs of the series.
The mintage of the 2006 1 oz Britannia PROOF silver coin was limited to 3,529 pieces, making it considerably scarcer than standard bullion versions.
