Obverse: National Emblem of China with country name above and date below. Lettering: 中华人民共和国 1986 (People’s Republic of China 1986).
Reverse: Giant panda on the left dividing mountains and the denomination 5 yuan. Chinese inscriptions.
About the coin: The 1986 5 yuan silver Panda coin was issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the World Wildlife Fund. The fund’s logo features Chi-Chi, a panda from the London Zoo. The coins were marketed both in a standard box with a certificate and in a small tri-fold portfolio containing the WWF story. While the proof quality looks better, the BU coin may be rarer, especially in high grade. This coin is not part of the regular Panda series, as its reverse shows the PRC five-star emblem instead of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
