Obverse: The obverse of the coin features birds, with the denomination – 20 EURO – placed on one of them. Below the denomination, the year of issue, 1997, is inscribed. Around the upper edge, the inscription KONINKRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN (Kingdom of the Netherlands) is engraved.
Reverse: The reverse of the coin features a portrait of the politician Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. Above, in an arc, the inscription JOHAN VAN OLDENBARNEVELT is engraved, while below, the years of his birth and death, 1547–1619, are indicated. The reverse was engraved by Willem Vis.
