Obverse: the obverse features the logo commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Italian Air Force. At the centre is a stylised number “100”, crossed diagonally by an ascending line featuring two aircraft from different eras – a historic aeroplane below and a modern jet aircraft above. The two zeros symbolise the shock waves created when an aircraft exceeds the speed of sound, while the two aircraft represent the development of Italian military aviation from its foundation to the present day. The years “1923” and “2023” appear on the right, the monogram of the Italian Republic “RI” is above, the “R” mint mark of the Rome Mint is on the left, and designer Valerio De Seta’s initials “VdS” appear on the right. The inscription “AERONAUTICA MILITARE” (Italian Air Force) appears below. The outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse: the reverse features the standard €2 coin design – a map of Europe symbolising the unity of European countries. The denomination “2 EURO” is also shown, while the outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union.
About the coin: this commemorative €2 coin was issued in 2023 to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Italian Air Force (“Aeronautica Militare”). The Italian Air Force was founded in 1923, which is why the design combines the dates 1923 and 2023. The symbolism of the centenary logo highlights a century of aviation technology and historical continuity – from the earliest military aircraft to modern jet aviation. The national side was designed by Valerio De Seta. A total of 3,000,000 coins were issued, including special Proof and Fior di Conio versions for collectors.
