Obverse: The obverse of the medal depicts the famous Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. The words "H. C. ANDERSEN" are written on the left side of the illustration. The figures "1805 - 1875 - 1975" are engraved on the right side, of which 1805-1875 denotes the year of the writer's birth and death, and 1975 the year of the release of the ducat.
Reverse: In the center of the reverse of the medal is a swan, and next to it a shore on which stands a dolmen - an ancient megalithic structure of two or more blocks of stone, one of which lies vertically at the top. The swan and the dolmen are the national symbols of Denmark. The words "I DANMARK ER JEG FØDT" are written at the top of the medal, which is from the Danish writer's poem "I Danmark er jeg født". At the bottom of the ducat are the Hauptmunzamt sign, the Vienna Engraver's initial, and purity of gold in ducat.
About the medal: The golden medal of Hans Christian Andersen is dedicated to the 170th birthday of the famous children’s fairytale writer. Medal designer - Frode Bahnsen. Also, the swan in the reverse of the medal can be seen as a character from the fairytale "Ugly duckling" which also can resemble the writer himself.
