About the coin: this 10-ruble gold coin, also known as the "Chervonets," was reintroduced before the 1980 Summer Olympics. The Central Bank of Russia hoped it would compete with the South African Krugerrand gold coin. In 2001, this "golden Chervonets" was officially recognized as a legal tender in Russia. A few years later, the Central Bank's reserves of these coins were depleted, and in 2006, a new investment gold coin featuring St. George was introduced.
