About the coin: 2023 marked the 150th anniversary of Latvia’s first Song Festival. This coin captures the many emotions associated with the Song Festival: a sense of togetherness, musical and emotional upliftment, and the visual harmony of the vibrant colors of national costumes. According to the artists, the coin’s shape is inspired by the movement of choir rows, the fluttering of flags, ribbons, and skirts, the emotional vibration, and the song itself – a sound wave – all of which are integral to the Song Festival. The colors and brightness merge with the diversity of national costumes, the festive atmosphere, and the elevated mood. We are used to seeing round coins, but Latvia's Song Festival is a global cultural phenomenon, so a unique horizontal rectangular shape was created for this coin.
