Obverse: the obverse of the coin features a portrait of the bearded President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger, facing left. Around the portrait is the inscription “ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK” (English: South African Republic). At the bottom of the portrait are the initials “O.S.” of the coin’s designer and engraver, Otto Schultz.
Reverse: the reverse depicts the coat of arms of the South African Republic. At its centre is a shield featuring a lion, a soldier, an ox wagon and an anchor. Above the shield is an eagle with outstretched wings, while flags flank the coat of arms on both sides. The ribbon below bears the national motto “EENDRAGT MAAKT MAGT” (English: “Unity Makes Strength”). The upper part of the coin displays the denomination “½ POND” and the year of issue “1895”.
About the coin: the 1895 1/2 Pond gold coin was issued by the South African Republic (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, also known as the Transvaal Republic) during the presidency of Paul Kruger. This type of 1/2 Pond coin was struck from 1892 to 1897 and was designed by German engraver Otto Schultz. The 1895 issue belongs to the later version of the design. The coin was struck from approximately 917 fine gold, weighs around 3.99 g and measures approximately 19.4 mm in diameter. Historically, the Pond monetary system was closely aligned with the British pound and sovereign standard, making the 1/2 Pond similar in size and gold content to the British Half Sovereign. Today, these coins are valued not only for their gold content but also as important numismatic relics of the 19th-century South African Republic and the era of Paul Kruger.
