Obverse: The set consists of eight 2008 Maltese euro coins ranging from 1 cent to 2 euros. The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins depict the prehistoric Mnajdra temple complex. The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins feature the coat of arms of Malta with a shield, crown and surrounding olive and palm branches. The €1 and €2 coins depict the Maltese Cross, one of the country's most recognisable symbols. The coins also bear the year 2008 and the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse: The reverse of the coins features the common European design corresponding to each euro denomination. The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins depict Europe in relation to the world, while the 10, 20 and 50 cent and €1 and €2 coins depict Europe as a single geographical continent. The designs also incorporate the 12 stars symbolising the European Union.
About the coins: The 2008 coins are Malta's first euro coins. Malta officially adopted the euro on 1 January 2008 together with Cyprus and became a member of the euro area. The euro replaced the Maltese lira at the fixed conversion rate of €1 = 0.429300 Maltese lira. The motifs for the national sides were selected through a public vote and represent three important aspects of Maltese identity – its prehistoric heritage, statehood and the Maltese Cross. This set is presented in special Prestige collector packaging, with the surfaces of the coins decorated with 24-carat gold and selective rhodium plating. The package also includes a large thematic medal. The stated mintage of this collector edition is 9,999 sets.
