The German S 98/05 n.A. “DEMAG Duisburg” sword bayonet with steel scabbard is a piece of German military history from the First World War, dating from approximately 1915–1918. The abbreviation “n.A.” stands for neue Art (“new type”) – an improved version of the S 98/05 introduced in 1915. Bayonets of this model were intended for Mauser Gewehr 98 rifles and Karabiner 98 carbines.
The bayonet features a broad, single-edged steel blade with a pointed tip and a deep longitudinal fuller. The grip consists of two diagonally grooved wooden scales attached to a metal base. The pommel houses the rifle attachment mechanism, while the steel flashguard characteristic of the n.A. version protected the wooden grip from propellant gases and muzzle flash. The maker’s mark “DEMAG Duisburg” is preserved on the ricasso. The set includes a tapering steel scabbard with a belt attachment stud.
