Obverse: The national side of the coin depicts a stylised panorama of Kaunas combining architecture from different historical periods. The composition features the Church of Vytautas the Great, the Cathedral Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, the House of Perkūnas, Kaunas Town Hall, the towers of the Jesuit Church and Kaunas Castle. On the right are symbols of the modernist architecture associated with the period when Kaunas served as the temporary capital – the Kaunas Central Post Office and the Basilica of the Resurrection of Christ. The design is complemented by the inscriptions KAUNAS, LIETUVA, the year 2026, the logo of the Lithuanian Mint and the designer's initials. The outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse: The reverse features the design common to all €2 coins: a geographical map of Western Europe positioned on the right side of the coin and extending across both the inner and outer sections. The inscription 2 EURO appears above the map, while the numeral 2 is set against the Atlantic Ocean. The outer ring contains 12 stars positioned on both sides of the map, with vertical lines visually connecting the upper and lower stars.
About the coin: Lithuania's 2026 commemorative €2 coin is dedicated to Kaunas and was issued on 1 October 2026. The national side was designed by Tomas Dragūnas. Kaunas served as the temporary capital of Lithuania from 1919 to 1939, and the distinctive modernist architecture developed during this period was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. The coin was minted by the Lithuanian Mint, and its edge bears the inscription LAISVĖ * VIENYBĖ * GEROVĖ *.
