Obverse: Depicts the historic Maltese cattle breed Il Ġendus Malti – a strong ox standing on grass. The inscription IL-ĠENDUS MALTI appears at the top in a semicircle, with MALTA 2025 below. The design was created by artist Maria Anna Frisone. The outer ring features the twelve stars of the European Union.
Reverse: The common reverse of all 2 euro coins – the denomination 2 EURO and a map of Europe on the left. This side was designed by Luc Luycx.
About the coin: The coin is dedicated to the rare and historically significant Maltese cattle breed Il Ġendus Malti, which served as working animals in agriculture for centuries. With the advent of mechanization, their numbers drastically declined. The coin highlights the importance of preserving this breed and its role in Malta’s heritage.
