Obverse: The obverse depicts the coat of arms of the Sēlija region – a silver stag on a red background, symbolising the identity of this historic region. At the top is the inscription LATVIJA, to the right – the year 2025, and at the bottom – SĒLIJA. The coin was designed by Laimonis Šēnbergs.
Reverse: The reverse features the common design used on all 2 euro coins: a map of Western Europe placed on the right side, covering both the inner and outer parts of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO appears at the top of the map, while the numeral 2 is set against the Atlantic Ocean. The outer ring contains 12 stars arranged on both sides of the map, visually connected by vertical lines.
About the coin: Issued in 2025, this 2 euro commemorative coin from Latvia is dedicated to the region of Sēlija, one of the country’s five historical regions. It concludes the regional series honouring Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, Zemgale, and Sēlija. Sēlija was officially recognised as a distinct region in 2021, and its coat of arms was approved in 2023. The silver stag with elaborate antlers symbolises pride and the strength of nature. The coin was minted at the Lithuanian Mint, weighs 8.5 g, has a diameter of 25.75 mm, and is bimetallic: a nickel-brass centre with a copper-nickel ring. The edge inscription reads DIEVS ☆ SVĒTĪ ☆ LATVIJU ☆.
