Obverse: the 1 and 2 euro coins depict the emblem of the Order of Malta, an octagonal cross; the 10, 20 and 50-cent coins depict a shield heraldically depicting the Maltese flag and a brick crown symbolising Malta's fortifications and state status; and the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins depict the altar of the prehistoric temple of Mnajdra, which was built in 3 600 BC. The obverse of the 2-euro commemorative coin depicts the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum.
