About the coin: Bees are very important for people's lives, especially in terms of sustainable agricultural production, and preventing global hunger. Approximately one third of the world's produce is dependent on petal pollination, when bees collect pollen. In Slovenia, beekeeping has particularly deep and old traditions. The beginning of modern beekeeping in Slovenia is Anton Janša (1734-1773). Slovenia is also the only European Union Member State with protected bean species (Carniolan gray and Apis mellifera carnica), which means that no other bee breed can be grown in Slovenia. Due to the high importance of beekeeping in Slovenia, the Slovenian beekeeping association, supported by the Republic of Slovenia, has presented to the United Nations the initiative to be proclaimed May 20 - World Bee Day. And on this occasion, this coin of distinctive design has been minted.
