Obverse: The centre of the coin features the inscriptions “#Latvija”, “#ripsakta”, “#3_4gs”, the face value “5 euro” and “#2016”, presented in a style reminiscent of modern digital communication. “#3_4gs” refers to the 3rd–4th centuries, the period to which the disc fibula reproduced in the coin's design is dated.
Reverse: Features a stylised 3rd–4th century disc fibula with an openwork geometric ornament. Its composition is associated with the symbolism of the sun, movement and continuity.
About the coin: In 2016, the Bank of Latvia issued this collector coin, “Gold Brooches. The Disc Fibula”, the first in a series of gold coins dedicated to historic Latvian brooches and the centenary of Latvian statehood. The design was created by Ingūna Elere, with the plaster model by Solvita Rulle. The coin was struck by the Austrian Mint from .9999 fine gold, weighs 3.1 g (approximately 1/10 troy ounce), measures 18 mm in diameter, has a Proof finish and a maximum mintage of 7,000 pieces.
