Obverse: The obverse of the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins depicts a variety of Greek military ships (the Athens Tropical Model, which is the largest warship; a replacement, a ship used during the Greek War of Independence; a modern marine tanker reflecting the innovative spirit of Greek shipping). The 10, 20 and 50-cent coins feature prominent representatives of the Greek state (Rig Fereos, a precursor to the leading Greek symbol of light, as well as a vision and caller for the liberation of the Balkans from the Ottoman government; Capodistrias, a leading national and European politician and diplomat who became the first Greek Governor after the Greek War of Independence, Eleftherios Venizelos, one of the most prominent Greek politicians, pioneer in social reform, a famous diplomat and played an important role in modernizing the Greek state). The obverse of the 1-euro coin depicts an owl whose image was copied from an ancient Athens 4-drachma coin, while the 2-euro coin depicts a scene from Sparta's mosaic in which Europe was kidnapped by Zeus, who was bull-shaped.
