The inscription "European Monetary Institute", "EMI" and "1994" appear at the top left. The outer part of the coin features the twelve stars of the European Union.

About the coin: this coin is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the European Monetary Institute. The European Monetary Institute was a precursor to the European Central Bank. Following the Maastricht Treaty of 1992, the European Monetary Institute was established in 1994. This was an important step towards the creation of the European Central Bank. The European Monetary Institute was an independent legal entity and was headed by a well-known Belgian economist and banker Alexander Lamfalussy until 1997.
