Obverse: The set consists of two 2003 San Marino euro coins – 20 cents and 50 cents. The 20 cent coin depicts Saint Marinus holding the city in his hand, based on a painting from the school of Guercino. The 50 cent coin depicts the three famous Towers of San Marino – Guaita, Cesta and Montale, rising on Mount Titano. The coins also feature the year 2003, the inscription SAN MARINO, the R mint mark of the Rome Mint and the 12 stars of the European Union.
Reverse: The reverse of the coins features the common European Union design used at the time for each respective euro denomination. The 20 and 50 cent coins depict the denomination and a map of the European Union member states. The design is complemented by 12 stars symbolising the European Union.
About the coins: The 2003 San Marino euro coin set is an official two-coin issue presented in a special BU card. The set consists of the 20 and 50 cent coins belonging to the first series of San Marino national euro coin designs, used from 2002 to 2016. The card features the coat of arms of San Marino and the official State Philatelic and Numismatic Office. The coin motifs are closely associated with the history of the republic: Saint Marinus is regarded as the founder of the state, while the three towers of Mount Titano are among the most important symbols of San Marino and are even depicted on the countrys coat of arms and flag.
