In the center of the coin, within an octagonal cartouche, is a shield with the emblem of the National Bank of Ukraine - the allegorical figures of griffins with a hryvnia placed between them. This emblem symbolizes the country's gold reserves. The obverse of the coin shows the denomination 'ДВАДЦЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ" (twenty hryvnias) and the year of issue. The metal, its fineness, and the weight of the coin in grams 'Au 999.9 31,1' are also indicated.
Reverse: depicts the Archangel Michael (Orthodoxy gives him the title of 'Archistrategos'), one of the most venerable figures in the Bible, well-known for his victory over evil, and the patron of warriors, the sick and the afflicted. The bottom of the coin is engraved with the lines from T. Shevchenko's "Haydamax": "ЗА НАС І ДУШІ ПРАВЕДНИХ, І СИЛА АРХІСТРАТИГА МИХАЇЛА" ("For us and for the souls of the righteous, the power of the Archangel Michael").
