About the coin: The 2017 Bhutan 50 Ngultrum silver coin commemorates one of the country's most famous religious and architectural landmarks – Paro Taktsang Monastery in the Himalayas.
Paro Taktsang, commonly known as the Tiger's Nest, stands on a steep cliff approximately 900 metres above the Paro Valley. According to Buddhist tradition, the spiritual master Padmasambhava arrived at this location on the back of a tigress and meditated in one of its caves. This legend gave the monastery its famous name.
The monastery complex was built in 1692 and remains one of Bhutan's most important Buddhist sacred sites. The coin commemorates the 325th anniversary of the establishment of this historic complex.
Struck from .999 fine silver, the coin weighs 1 troy ounce (31.1 g) and measures 38.61 mm in diameter. This collectible release celebrates Bhutan's spiritual heritage and the distinctive architecture of the Himalayas.
