Around these elements is a circle engraved with the words 'LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ' (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) and the name of the country of origin of the coin, 'RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE' (French Republic).
Reverse: the reverse of the coin shows a stylised portrait of Charlemagne. The inscription 'CHARLE MAGNE -742 814-' is engraved below the portrait, reflecting Charlemagne's name and the year of his life.
