Obverse: the obverse of the medal depicts the Finnish symbol, the lion. The medal features a medal with the symbol of the country of origin on the top and bottom, engraved with the name of the country of origin in two languages 'SUOMI FINLAND'.
Reverse: the reverse of the medal depicts people walking through the Porkala Gate. The inscription 'PORKKALAN PALAUTUS 1956' (in English: Recapture of Porkala) is engraved on the bottom.
About the medal: In the 1930s, Porkala was briefly a Finnish national park until 1944, when Finland and the Soviet Union concluded the Moscow Peace Treaty, under which Porkala was to be leased to the Soviet Union for 50 years. The reason for the Soviet Union's demand was its strategic location near Helsinki and the fact that Porkala was the narrowest point in the Gulf of Finland. However, 12 years later, in 1956, Porkala was returned to Finland: due to advances in arms production, distance and strategic position were no longer important to the Soviet Union.
