About the coin: the South African Mint continues its series of the coveted "Big Five" animals. The series features a total of five coins, all dedicated to the spectacular South African wildlife. The animals known as the 'Big Five' - elephant, lion, buffalo, rhinoceros, and leopard - are considered to be the symbols and ambassadors of this culturally rich country, and are representative of African fauna. The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is perhaps the largest and most spectacular representative of the African animal kingdom and is generally associated with power and strength. The "gentle giant" has an excellent memory and very social behaviour. Elephants can live up to 60 years in the wild, but the threat of poachers remains high.
