Reverse: this year's coin shows a kangaroo. The top of the coin features the words "Australian Kangaroo" and the year of minting, the weight of pure gold "1/10 oz.", the fineness "9999" and the precious metal name "GOLD". Next to the kangaroo, on the left-hand side of the coin, is the letter "P", which is the mintmark of the Perth Mint.
Obverse: the obverse of the coin depicts Queen Elizabeth II (Australia is a constitutional monarchy under which Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is also Queen of Australia). The obverse of the coin bears the words 'ELIZABETH II' and the name of the State 'AUSTRALIA', while the bottom of the coin bears the denomination '15 DOLLARS'. The initials JC (Jody Clark) of the designer are engraved on the left-hand side of the image of the Queen.
About the coin: each year this coin is struck with a different image of Kangaroo. This Australian Gold Kangaroo coin contains 99.99% pure gold, which is why it has long been known as the 'Gold Nugget'. This coin is minted entirely from pure gold, with no other metals mixed in. This pure gold coin is the official tender in Australia. Australia started minting pure gold coins in 1987, but from 1989 the design was changed and these Gold Nuggets with the Kangaroo image were minted.
