Obverse: the obverse of the coin depicts the coat of arms of the city of Hamburg, protected by lions on both sides. The inscription "FREIE UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG. DEUTSCHES REICH" is inscribed in a semicircle on the top of the coin. The letter 'J' is the mint mark of the Hamburg Mint and it is engraved on the bottom of the coin.
Reverse: the coat of arms of the German Empire - the Imperial Eagle with a crown, around the inscription "DEUTSCHES REICH" (eng. German Empire) and the year of the coin. At the bottom of the coin denomination is "20 MARK".
Edge: the inscription "GOTT MIT UNS" is lit. (God with us).
